###

Perpendicular
To your pendulum necklace
Stopped between my lips

###

Cruel
You call me liar
And I grin
Shrug my shoulders
And turn to walk away
Wishing
For complete nonchalance
But not
With this tug-of-war
In my head
Myself at both ends
Is this to make them meet?

###

Subconscious

Mere twitch or flinch
On the outside
But beneath I wrestle
Pin down each thought
I want buried

I bite my tongue
(A reflex)
I sweep my mind
(Or vacuum it)

I stop and turn
From voices never ordinary
But pervasive

I close my eyes
And choose to start anew
Again

I lock the cell door to memory
Wait until the pinned-down
Struggling thing
Tires itself

(Fear your dreams
Now
Headstrong girl)

###

you make me
scream
dream
laugh with a half-frown
and a laurel-leaf crown
that hides thorns as I mourn
moans subsiding as I’m torn
between stopping smiles
and forgoing miles
to see you
watchingwaitingsmiling
for another
no wonder
don’t bother
if I smother
a scream
and a dream

###

These were written between 2002 and 2010.
